Happy

When I get home from work most days, I have a lengthy to-do list of tasks waiting for me: putting away laundry, watering plants, feeding my fat cat, tidying up, whatever needs to get done for me to feel like all is in order. I like to cross everything off before I settle down and relax to enjoy the rest of the evening with my husband.

Yesterday, one of those tasks on my list was watering the potted plants outside. I ventured into the yard with my watering can, and I was instantly greeted by one of our outdoor rescue cats. She was particularly needy, following me around, meowing and head-butting me for attention, so when she hopped up into a chair under a tree in our yard, I sat down with her and petted her and laughed as she pranced and purred, so happy to be the center of my attention.

After a while, I looked up from her antics, and my husband walked around the side of the house. I smiled and said, “Hey, what are you doing?”

He looked a bit like a pouting little boy, and he told me, “I waited for you to come home, because I missed you, so I came out to see what you were doing so long out here.”

My heart melted. I got up and went to him, took his hand, and we walked around the yard, just talking and pointing out things we want to do with the garden or the house. He was excited to show me all the buds on the hydrangeas, one of my favorite plants.

When we went inside, I stashed the watering can away, set aside my to-do list, and happily snuggled into him. I look forward all day to coming home to him, too, and I just wanted to enjoy that, entirely, completely.
